The Obama Foundation was established in 2014, following the end of President Barack Obama’s second term in office. The foundation’s mission is to inspire and empower the next generation of leaders through the Obama Presidential Center, community leadership training, and other programs. With a focus on civic engagement, social justice, and leadership development, the Obama Foundation continues to carry out President Obama’s vision of creating positive change in the world.
During his presidency, President Obama made history in many ways, particularly when it comes to technology and climate change. As the first “Social Media President,” Obama appointed the first Chief Technology Officer and built an online civic engagement platform, We The People. He also founded his own tech startups, including the United States Digital Service (USDS), 18F, and the Presidential Innovation Fellows.
President Obama was committed to taking responsible steps to slow the effects of climate change. In partnership with Canada, the Obama Administration took historic steps to build a strong Arctic economy, preserve a healthy Arctic ecosystem, and protect the United States’ fragile Arctic waters. Additionally, the Administration announced new private sector commitments and executive actions to reduce emissions of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), powerful greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change.
The Obama Foundation’s community leadership training program, the Community Leadership Corps, provides young leaders with the skills and resources they need to tackle pressing social issues in their communities. The Obama Presidential Center, which is set to open in Chicago in 2021, will serve as a hub for community engagement, social justice, and leadership development. It will feature a museum, a public plaza, and a community space, as well as host events and programs focused on civic engagement.
Through the Obama Foundation’s programs, the legacy of President Obama’s leadership and service lives on. The foundation’s focus on empowering the next generation of leaders to create positive change in their communities and the world is a testament to the impact that President Obama had during his time in office. As the world continues to face new challenges, the Obama Foundation’s commitment to leadership and service serves as a beacon of hope for the future.
